"Dig Once" Legislation Introduced to Reduce Cost and Motorist Disruption in Making Broadband Available

Description:	U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Senator Mark Warner recently introduced a 'dig once' bill called "Broadband Conduit Deployment Act of 2009". The bill requires that broadband conduit be installed during any new federally-funded projects such as building a new highway or adding lanes to existing roadways. Installing broadband at the same time other roadwork is being done is intended to help make the expansion of broadband networks more cost-effective and to reduce driver inconvenience and delays from repeated road construction. The bill allows the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Communications Commissions to waive this requirement on a project-by-project basis if it is deemed unnecessary.
