Agency Training Examples

Section 630.1008(d) of the Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule specifies that agencies require appropriate training for personnel involved in the development, design, implementation, operation, inspection, and enforcement of work zone related transportation management and traffic control. Several States have developed and implemented plans and courses for training personnel involved with work zones.

This page provides information about nationally available work zone training programs. For information about selected state-specific training programs, please visit the Training Examples page.

Training Available From Work Zone Safety Grants Program
The Work Zone Safety Grants program provides highway work zone safety training and develops guidelines to prevent and reduce work zone injuries and fatalities. This page provides information on available courses and materials that have been developed as part of the Work Zone Safety Grants program.

National Highway Institute Courses
Information about the availability of new work zone training courses as well as information on other NHI work zone related courses. Now available: Advanced Work Zone Management and Design (Course No. FHWA-NHI-380072).

Work Zone Law Enforcement Training Course
FHWA has developed a training course that provides basic knowledge to promote the safe and effective use of law enforcement in work zones. As a result of this course, participants will understand the role of law enforcement officers in work zones; recognize proper practices and procedures related to the use of law enforcement officers in work zones; recognize the component parts of a typical work zone; and understand standards and guidelines related to temporary traffic control in work zones. The tools provided for this training course consist of an Instructors Manual, Participants Guide, Pocket Guide, and PowerPoint Training Modules. These materials are available for download from the link noted above. A limited number of hard copies are also available. The FHWA training course, and a Louisiana law enforcement training program, are briefly described in an FHWA fact sheet (HTMLPDF 961KB).

Utility Work Zone Traffic Control Training
Wayne State University (WSU) received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop safety and mobility guidelines for utility work zone traffic control. The overall objectives of this grant are to 1) develop utility work zone safety guidelines to assist transportation agencies, utility companies and contractors in achieving reductions in injuries and fatalities while complying with FHWA's "Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule", 2) develop a training program based on the developed utility work zone safety and mobility guidelines and 3) conduct "train-the-trainer" workshops at a national level and pilot training sessions on the methods and procedures of implementing utility work zone safety guidelines developed as a part of this project.

Highway Work Zone Safety & Awareness Program for New Drivers: The "Turning Point" Campaign
FHWA, in partnership with ARTBA, has developed training materials aimed at increasing the awareness of new drivers to work zone hazards and providing them with tips for safely negotiating highway work zone situations. The Turning Point Campaign provides a variety of training materials and a web site that will be useful for driving instructors, as well as parents.
