Understanding the Problem

Day after Occurrence

  • Re-establishing the transportation system (assuming that portions of the network are unavailable)

  • Re-establishing movement of people and goods

Three photos fill the right side of the slide. From left to right they show a suburban Atlanta passenger train traveling aboveground between stations, the background is very lush and green, full of trees under a blue sky, in the foreground there are vivid red flowers growing; a long freight train moving across a railway bridge through a desert terrain, the background is sand filled buttes with scrubby little growth; a signalized highway ramp, with heavy traffic merging into heavy traffic, direction of travel is away from the eye, oncoming traffic on the opposite side is just as heavy.
