On July 13th, 2009, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the state's capital budget bill which included a new weight law for trucks driving in Illinois. Starting January 1st, 2010 Illinois will adopt a uniform 80,000-pound truck weight limit law for state routes and other local roads. Currently, municipalities in Illinois can enforce a weight maximum of only 73,280 pounds once a truck leaves interstate highways. Under the new law, local governments may still post weight limits less than 80,000 pounds if they can show that a bridge can not carry the heavier load or if a road is subject to stress from freezing and thawing. |
