Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has recently released their quarterly performance report on transportation systems, programs, and department management entitled The Gray Notebook. The Gray Notebook covers the quarter ending on March 31, 2009. One significant finding of this report is that truck volumes on Washington state highways have decreased from 2007 to 2008 and this is thought to have been caused by the current economic situation. Much like truck volume, air cargo volume through Sea-Tac airport has fallen nine percent from 2007 to 2008. Although there has been a decrease in truck volume, the commercial truck registration has increased 2.4% from 2007 to 2008. Washington State's 2009 Marine Cargo forecast has been completed, and this forecast expects that the number of international containers going through Washington seaports will triple by 2030. Total freight rail traffic has increased from 2005 to 2007 and is expected to continue rising. One final highlight of the freight section of The Gray Notebook is that a pilot program investigating the usefulness of GPS truck-tracking data is currently underway. |
